Should I play Ukulele or Guitar first?

Should I play ukulele or guitar first?

The guitar and the ukulele are two instruments that may look alike, but they have different requirements for those who wish to learn how to play them. If you're trying to decide on what to play first, then it’s important to know what you are getting into. In this article, we'll look at some of the similarities and differences between these two instruments so that you can make an informed choice when deciding which one to start with.

Similarities Between the Guitar and the Ukulele

1. Both instruments are made of wood.

There are many types of wood that can be used for guitars and ukuleles. The most common type of wood used maple because it's very strong but also has a nice tone when played. Other popular choices of wood include mahogany, spruce, and rosewood. The best thing about exploring different kinds of wood is that you get to choose what kind of sound you want out of it.

2. They're both played similarly.

Ukuleles and guitars are played by holding the instrument in one hand while using the other to strum or pluck. This is why many guitar players find it easy to learn the ukulele, and vice-versa. The left hand is used for picking strings, fretting chords, and playing single notes on a string.

3. Both instruments come in different sizes.

Both the ukulele and the guitar come in different sizes to cater to a variety of people. Ukuleles sizes are called soprano, concert, tenor, and baritone. On the other hand, acoustic guitars usually come in ¼, ½, ¾, and full sizes. However, you should remember that different ukulele sizes produce different tones, while the different sizes of the acoustic guitar are made for different age groups.

Differences Between the Guitar and Ukulele

1. The ukulele is smaller than a guitar.

One of the most obvious differences between the two instruments is their general different size. The ukulele is smaller than the guitar, making it easier to hold for younger players or people with small hands. It’s also great for traveling because it takes very little room when packed away. You’ll also find that you have less strain on your back when you play the guitar since it’s heavier. However, the smaller frets on the ukulele can be a challenge for people who have big hands.

2. They have different strings.

On an electric or acoustic guitar, you have six metal strings running up and down your instrument's neck. When you hold the guitar with the neck on your left hand, the string closest to you is the lowest, while the string at the bottom is the highest. On a uke, however, you only have four nylon strings instead of metal ones. These aren't tuned in order from high to low pitch; rather, they are usually tuned in G-C-E-A.

3. The cost of guitars can be higher than ukuleles.

A good quality guitar will start anywhere from $200-$500 depending on what kind of wood it has been made out of, the size, and whether or not it comes equipped with electronics like pickups and pedals. On the other hand, ukuleles tend to start at around $100-150 and go upwards of $200 or more if you want one with fancy features such as adjustable tuners or onboard effects.

4. A guitar's range of notes is much greater than that of a ukulele.

When playing on stage, many things go into creating a good sound. One thing that will affect how loud you can be heard by other musicians is the tone of your instruments. Since a guitar is bigger and has more frets, it has a greater range of notes. So if you’re looking to play songs that are of greater range, then it might be ideal for you to pick up a guitar.

So, Guitar or Ukulele?

Well, the answer is really up to you. Now that we’ve talked about some of their similarities and differences, you can make a decision on which instrument you should play first. While ukuleles are easier to play than the guitar, there might be some of you who would pick the guitar first.

However, you should always remember that playing an instrument takes time and dedication, so you need to practice a lot before you can be good at it. There are a lot of ways you can learn the instrument: from books, online lessons, private instruction and group classes, or even just playing around with friends!
